Hydra-Matic 9T50 Balances Performance and Efficiency

When you test drive the 2017 Chevy Malibu at Chapman Chevrolet, pay particular attention to the automatic transmission’s ability to provide plenty of power while shifting easily through the gears. That quiet refinement you might otherwise not notice is the result of hundreds of hours of engineering with a goal of providing maximum benefits to the customer. “In addition to improved fuel efficiency, the 9T50 offers a strong balance of performance and refinement that customers will feel at all driving speeds,” according to VP of Global Propulsion Systems Dan Nicholson. “By the end of 2017, Chevrolet will offer four models with the new nine-speed.”

No Matter Speed, Transmission ‘Always in Perfect Gear’

The nine-speed transmission, also soon to be available in the Cruze Diesel and 2018 Equinox, has a powerful first gear that provides excellent acceleration, then smaller increments as you move through all the progressions. “The smaller steps between the gears, compared to the eight-speed, enable smooth, almost imperceptible upshifts, for excellent refinement,” Nicholson said. “No matter the engine torque or vehicle speed, the 9T50 is always in the perfect gear.” The new 9T50 is also set up to accept start/stop technology, which shuts down the engine in stop and go traffic to improve efficiency. “Everything about the new nine-speed is designed to maximize the benefits for the customer,” according to Chevy Marketing Director Steve Majoros. “It helps offer greater fuel efficiency in the city and on the highway, with all the world-class refinement that makes the drive quiet and smooth.” The new nine-speed transmission results in a 3 percent increase in fuel efficiency for the Malibu, boosting the highway estimate to 33 mpg.

Grade Braking Helps Control Descent

The Hydra-Matic 9T50 includes a set of shift controls with automatic grade braking that helps you keep your vehicle under control without using the brakes on long descents. A control module automatically monitors the speed of the vehicle, position of the throttle, brake usage and whether or not you’re pulling a trailer. This technology is part of a transmission control module that is in charge of all shifting events, as well as monitoring transmission performance. The Chevy Malibu is just another star in the automaker’s new lineup, which you can inspect and drive by taking a trip to Chapman Chevrolet. Along with the new transmission, the Chevy Malibu offers Teen Driver technology, which makes sure certain safety procedures are followed and can even provide a report on your teen’s driving habits.
