Nimbleness and Maneuverability Define Newest Colorado

Expect the competition to sit up and take notice when the new Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 arrives at Chapman Chevrolet in the near future. The mid-size Colorado, which was Motor Trend’s Truck of the Year for 2016, gets a wider stance and lift package for the ZR2 configuration. Rockers and modified bumpers allow the ZR2 better clearance and the ability to fend off boulders and other obstacles that live on some of America’s toughest trails. Specially designed dampers allow the ZR2 the versatility to perform well in all types of conditions. “You can go rock crawling on Saturday, desert running on Sunday and comfortably drive to work on Monday,” said Global Product Development VP Mark Reuss. “This truck can do it all, and do it all well.”

Special Dampers Used in Formula One Racing

The Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 is the first off-road application of the innovative Multimatic Dynamic Suspensions Spool Valve (DSSV) dampers that to this point have been used on sports cars like the Corvette and Camaro, as well as in Formula One Racing. The dampers use spool valves to control compression and wheel travel, as well as a special rebound valve on the front dampers to help reign in the vehicle’s vertical lift when the suspension is fully-extended. “A traditional, deflected disc damper only offers two force-velocity curves for tuning,” Chevy engineer Mark Dickens said. “The ZR2 offers six tuning curves for the front, four at the rear. For the driver, this translates to greater confidence and control in a wider range of driving experiences.”

Nine Driving Modes Most in Class

With electronic lockers in both the front and rear as well as Chevy’s AutoTrac transfer case, the ZR2 lets drivers choose from nine different powertrain configurations depending on road or trail conditions. You can run the ZR2 in straight 2-wheel drive for the best fuel efficiency, or in a number of different 4-wheel drive modes with the transfer case and differential either locked or unlocked. A new button also allows the anti-lock brakes, stability control and traction control to enter “off-road” mode so the driver can get the best performance out of the ZR2.

Choose From Gas or Diesel

The Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 not only offers superior handling and control, but buyers can choose from either a 3.6L V6 gas engine or a Duramax diesel. Even with all the power and capability, the ZR2 is about a foot narrower than full-size off-road trucks, which can mean the difference between making it through a mountain pass or turning around and going home. Fierce Torque Helps Nab Award

Naturally Aspirated Engine Has “Gobs of Power”

In order to keep the price down, Chevy has chosen to use a naturally aspirated engine in the Corvette Grand Sport. As Car and Driver says, the 6.2L motor puts out 460 horsepower and has “gobs of power.” Using the 7-speed manual transmission, test drivers were able to hit 60 miles per hour in just 3.9 seconds, although Chevy says it can accomplish the feat in 3.6 seconds. It took just 12.3 seconds to run the quarter-mile while hitting a top speed of 117 mph. Special magnetic dampers and an electronic differential help maintain control, while special large brakes help you stop in a hurry. Not that gas mileage is a huge consideration when you’re looking at an iconic American muscle car, but the Corvette Grand Sport is rated at 26 mpg on the highway, assuming the highway is longer than a quarter-mile.

Grand Sport Evolved Over 44 Years

The first showing of the Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport was in 1963 when five prototypes were made, also with a 6.2L engine. The Grand Sport came around again in 1996 as a limited 1,000 unit run to celebrate the final production of the fourth-generation Corvette. In 2010 the Grand Sport made another appearance, built on a wide Z06 chassis and once again with a 6.2L engine. The latest incarnation is the most powerful and fastest Grand Sport yet.
