Summer is here and therefore road trips are too. Road trips are a great way to explore America with a friend or just get to where you need to go to take a vacation by yourself. No matter your motives, Chapman Chevrolet wants you to know some things before taking off in order to make your road trip as enjoyable and safe as possible. Some of the best things to have on a road cheap are the cheapest and simplest. Also, a lot of problems one might face on a road trip can be solved before they happen.

The number one thing to have is a first-aid kit; it’s better to have one and not need it than to need it and not have it. Simple but potentially lifesaving kits are sold for less than $15 at many large grocery stores. A flashlight, food and water are as equally important. Keep in mind you might need certain things depending on where you are leaving or traveling to. For Example, if you are leaving a hot climate but plan on driving to a snowy mountain be sure to prepare for both temperatures. On road trips, many people pull over to the side of the road at night. If you encounter a situation like this be sure to use proper car lighting to let other drivers know you are there and remain visible. Also, be aware on the sides of many rural freeways live wild animals and depending on where you are, poisonous ones. For this reason a flashlight is important.

Some of the biggest problems one can encounter on a road trip can be solved before you ever turn the car on. The first thing I would recommend doing is checking the tire-pressure and the oil level on your car before leaving home. Having the correct tire-pressure will increase fuel efficiency, improve handling and decrease the chance of a blowout. Having the correct oil level is important every day but it is most important before a road trip because of the stress put on the engine during extended drives. Remember that to much oil can be just as bad as to little and having the wrong oil level is a sure way to increase the likelihood of engine problems.

Last but not least is a simple tip that everyone knows but tries to ignore. Plan you route in advance! We’ve all found ourselves lost after leaving home as confident as can be in our navigation skills. There’s no excuse for getting lost now a days with resources such as MapQuest.com and Google Maps. Google Maps is by far the best and easiest way to plan a route. Also, with Google Maps applications available on almost every Smartphone plan, accurate directions are that much more accessible.
